96X Memphis has been reimagined and rebuilt by native Memphian and former 96X Music Director and on-air talent John Michael. A 30-year radio and music industry veteran, John’s career includes highly-successful stops in New Orleans, Memphis, Tucson, Cincinnati and a nearly two decade run with CBS Radio in Los Angeles at The World-Famous KROQ, KCBS, and AMP Radio.
In early 2021, John decided to take on the challenge of building a streaming radio station that doesn’t sound like anything currently on commercial FM radio. Rather than build a brand around assumptions and stereotypes, 96X Memphis is being built with and for the community. John’s contention is that radio, if it is to have any chance at relevancy now and in the future, is going to have to think more about community involvement and investment and less about national scale.
96X Memphis went live in July of 2021 and is rapidly gaining a following of listeners all over the world. 96X Memphis has received local and national media attention, and is poised to blaze a new trail as radio transitions from traditional, corporate-controlled over-the-air distribution to fully independent, platform agnostic digital distribution.
